Maintenance Tips After Installing Travertine Stone Pavers

Installing stone pavers as part of a new landscape design is a wonderful way to add natural beauty to your outdoor areas. Travertine stone pavers have a stunning natural colour to them, so they are an ideal choice for landscaping projects. Additionally, travertine stone is low-maintenance, so you will not need to spend a lot of time caring for it. However, low-maintenance does not mean no maintenance, so follow these tips to ensure that your stone pavers look perfect for many years to come.

Sealant

Immediately after the travertine stone pavers are laid, they must be sealed with a quality sealant. Your landscaper has advice on which product best suits the climate and location of your home. The reason for the sealant is that the pavers are made of natural stone, so there are tiny holes which become crevices for water droplets to sit. When water sits for a time, then mould and mildew grows. These need to be scrubbed away regularly as they stain the pavers if left in place. Rather than deal with the manual labour task of scrubbing away mould and mildew, seal the stone pavers so they cannot grow in the first place. Sealant should be reapplied each year.

Clean Regularly

It does not take much effort to clean travertine stone pavers, but this task should be done on a bi-weekly basis. Dirt and stones must be swept away, and then the pavers mopped with warm soapy water if they look still appear dirty. By removing surface dirt from the paver, not only does it mean they look good all the time, but also there is nothing left sitting on top of the sealant which can prematurely discolour or erode it.

Inspect for Chips or Cracks

Travertine stone pavers are durable, which makes them a perfect choice for outdoor areas. However, every season you must take a closer look to locate any paving stones which have cracks or chips in them. These are areas of weakness for the paver, which makes them vulnerable to penetration by water. When water sits within a crack, it expands and contracts as the weather changes, and this grows the size of the crack. Regular inspection of the pavers ensures that vulnerable pavers are repaired or replaced as recommended by your landscaper.

Now that you know how to care for travertine stone pavers, moving forward with the installation of these means they will retain their natural beauty for many years ahead.
